Between the World and Me

On 21 November 2020, HBO premiered a screen adaptation of Coates' celebrated  narrative by combining elements of the Apollo Theater's 2018 stage production of the book with powerful readings from the book itself and documentary footage from participating actors' home lives, as well as archival footage and original animation. The YSC participated in a podcast and panel as a supplement to the HBO premiere.

Collegiate Panel

In this video, artists and scholars reflect on Between the World and Me and its impact in the theater and classroom. Panelists include:

• Dr. Daphne A. Brooks, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of African American Studies, American Studies, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Music at Yale University. Her book Bodies in Dissent: Spectacular Performances of Race and Freedom, 1850-1910 (Durham, NC: Duke UP), was the winner of The Errol Hill Award for Outstanding Scholarship on African American Performance.
• Dr. Natalie Hopkinson, Assistant Professor in the doctoral program in Howard University’s Department of Communication, Culture and Media Studies. Her most recent book, A Mouth is Always Muzzled (The New Press), was winner of the 2018 Independent Publisher’s Association Spirit Award and was longlisted for 2019 PEN America’s Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay.
• Jason Moran, Composer for both the stage and film adaptations of Between the World and Me. A pianist, composer, and artist who mines a variety of performance styles to create adventurous, genre-crossing jazz performances, Jason is the Artistic Director for Jazz at The Kennedy Center. In 2014, he composed his first feature film score for Selma, directed by Ava DuVernay, as well as DuVernay’s 13th, and in 2010 was the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation “Genius” grant. He teaches at the New England Conservatory.
