Exile and Kinship
In partnership with Artspace New Haven, join visual artist Baseera Khan and skateboard ambassador Dr. Neftalie Williams to explore methods for illuminating the non-neutrality of spaces and how to make them habitable for a plethora of experiences..
Sessionists
New York-based artist Baseera Khan is featured in Dyschronics, on view at Artspace New Haven, February 11–April 16, 2022, which explores womxn and non-binary experiences of time within various kinds of migration. Khan employs music, fashion photography, textiles, installations and performances to grapple with capitalism and its exertion on our bodies, religions and cultures. Rather than considering their art as a form of “activism,” however, their research-based practice brings to the surface the non-neutrality of the spaces that our bodies occupy, especially for those who are disenfranchised by capitalist-driven societies like the United States.
Dr. Neftalie Williams is a sociologist and USC Provost’s Post-Doctoral Scholar at the Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism, and Yale Schwarzman Center Visiting Fellow in Race, Culture & Community. He investigates global issues of race, diversity, identity, and youth empowerment, using the lens of action sports culture. Williams holds a Ph.D. from the University of Waikato and has upcoming books with Artisan Books and UC Press focused on skateboarding culture.
